# Triggers

> Start work automatically, at a set time or when a message comes in.

A trigger starts work by itself:

* **Date and time:** once, or every day, week or month.
* **A message:** an agent starts when a chat message says what you describe, such as "A client agrees with our proposal".

![The Triggers page with triggers at a time and a trigger on a message](https://mintcdn.com/temperate/fiKOImnzsBaUE79z/images/triggers.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=fiKOImnzsBaUE79z\&q=85\&s=1d9c1d1afd206b18294f0b3a9eebf5da)

## Create a trigger

**1. Start**

Open **Triggers** in the rail and select **New trigger**.

**2. Choose when**

Name it and pick a **Type**. For **Date and time**, choose how often and when. For **A message**, describe what the message should say, and whose messages to listen to.

**3. Choose what**

Pick the **Agent**. A trigger at a set time can also run without one: write the **Instructions** Temperate should follow.

**4. Choose where**

Pick a **Project**, or the space.

> [!TIP]
>
> For a one-off, just ask in a chat: "Remind me on Friday at 9:00 to call De Vries BV."

## Triggers on a message

These listen to shared chats and to chats with guests, never to private chats. The agent reads the message and its files, and can answer in that chat. If it wants to change something, your Inbox shows which message started it.

## See the results

Each run is a chat of yours, listed under **Last results**, and you get a notice in your [Inbox](https://docs.temperate.works/approvals/inbox.md). A trigger can take a few minutes longer than a chat, and uses less of your [usage](https://docs.temperate.works/admin/usage.md).

## Pause or delete

Use the switch on a row to pause a trigger. To change or delete it, open the row's menu. Times missed during a pause aren't caught up.
